Yeah, I mean I suppose it'll sound cool live, but taking an intrinsically country song and slapping all that synth and reverb all over it -- there's only so far you can take the 80s sound. Ever since the Shining thing happened, I feel like he can't play most of those songs from Cold Roses and JCN anymore. They're too dynamic and roots rock/folk/country to make any sense in his shows now, since he's got this big 80s thing going on.
If a band is good enough, they can pull of genre-hopping mid show; but we're not talking about Wilco here. I remember seeing them in Montclair, NJ back in 2011 where they seamlessly went from an electric set that faded into a wall of noise and seamlessly eased into an acoustic set, and then back again.
