Contender for most romantic song

#61

I love that song (Martha) – and the whole album, of course. That song hits home definitely – it’s always that woman who “got away” (perhaps she was never “mine” in the first place). All the missed chances perceived or real all the same.

Though for me, most romantic always means something positive – that the love is working out or at least it’s going well – whatever that means. Hence my overtly sappy selections; these are the songs I play in the early days when it’s this surreal fantastical thing that’s larger than life.

On the note of Tom Waits, I love Nighthawks at the Diner and The Heart of Saturday Night. Nighthawks is so off-kilter and different to me; or at least at the time I first heard it I was amazed at how unique it was to me; I loved the improvisational energy and how everything just was rattled off in the moment. This “hey lets go down to a club and just play and record it”. Just wow.

And for Heart of Saturday Night, I can just feel the heartbeat of the city (for me, NYC) in this one.

Love how this turned into a Tom Waits appreciation thread.

It’s okay, I got you. It’s about to be a split off thread.

Romantic songs about the one that got away are my favorite.

Have Love Will Travel is one of my favorites.

Maybe I didn’t see it, but obviously this has to be here, Wonderful Tonight. I love this live version:

the best romantic song ever… come on guys…it’s so simple!

We said we’d walk together, baby, come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we’re walking a hand should slip free
I’ll wait for you, should I fall behind wait for me

We swore we’d travel, darling, side by side
We’d help each other stay in stride
But each lover’s steps fall so differently
But I’ll wait for you, and if I should fall behind wait for me

Now everyone dreams of love lasting and true
Oh but you and I know what this world can do
So let’s make our steps clear that the other may see
And I’ll wait for you, and if I should fall behind wait for me

Now there’s a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There 'neath the oak’s bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I’ll wait for you, should I fall behind wait for me
Darling, I’ll wait for you, and should I fall behind wait for me
Yeah I’ll wait for you, and should I fall behind wait for me
I’ll wait for you, should I fall behind wait for me
I’ll wait for you, should I fall

Cannot think of anything that beats that one, Balv.

However, this one has an earnest quality that is hard to shake off, at least for me. Guess it has something to do with the phrasing and the way Nichols lingers on certain words (in particular the part “if it’s eeeenooooough for you” and its variations).

I like the Seeger Session waltz better.

I played this for my sister’s walk down the aisle 7 years ago this month.
