I joined Hot Freaks yesterday. Sorry, it’s not a porno site. It’s a Robert Pollard/Guided By Voices subscription service. It’s $100 for a year & they send downloads of new songs & rarities & live shit. They update every Tuesday. The first one just came now. Pollard is awesome!! He might have even surpassed Westerberg for me. And I’ve worshipped at the altar of Westerberg for over 30 years.
I am aware of this Hot Freaks thing and it sounds like a really great thing.
More independent artists/bands should do stuff like this. Especially now during these fucked up times when they can’t do shows to earn money. Fans will get behind this kind of thing to help support their favorite musicians. I wish more artists/bands would follow the kind of business model that Pollard/GBV practice. Have your own label and release your own music on your own fucking terms. He started the Guided By Voices Inc. label around 2008 and hasn’t looked back. I know it’s easier said than done. You would probably need a devoted fan base for that kind of venture. But, I would think it could be pretty rewarding for artists who possess a little self-awareness & realize they’re not likely going to be huge stars that sell albums by the million. May indie rock & DIY rock on!!!
This is basically what the NPG Club was for Prince. He started doing this in 2001. I believe Prince’s club even offered a podcast at one point. The premium tier also included preferred seating and VIP meet-and-greets at concerts and a few physical CDs exclusive to the club. It was a novel idea that I thought was way ahead of its time. I agree, more independent artists should do the same.
