Speaking of Jason Isbell, the new live-to-acetate collection is quite a thing. I really think it is him reestablishing his band as hard-rocking badasses... which anybody who's seen them in concert can attest.
I listened in my car last night with the volume cranked up and I was thinking fuck yeah, he proved it. Great songs and great performances. The new album will solidify this when it's released, I'm sure. The fact that they did it one take, direct to disk without overdubs and redo's "only available on vinyl" makes it a historic release.
The other thing is that it is all cover songs his band is confident playing and that makes it even more of a great idea. Could you imagine MMJ or the Black Crowes doing this? It kind of separates the great bands from the rest if they can pull it off. He's thrown down the gauntlet!
