well, I do think his cover of 1989 was probably the best thing he’s done since Ashes & Fire, or perhaps since the Cold Roses/JCN/29 days. That’s not a good thing though.

Agreed, he’s gotta give it a rest with the social media in general. Though I’m not surprised he’s hooked – the whole platform is designed to feed on a person’s ego.


I could never bring myself to listen to the entirety of the Taylor Swift covers. It was such a strange choice and the material seemed beneath him at the time, but maybe that’s shitty to say. I heard a few in passing, and there was one that sounded decent but by that point he had lost me.


1989 is the only album I liked since the '05 onslaught. I wasn’t familiar with Swifts album so it played like another Rock n Roll to me in ways. One of my favorites but he’s still a dick.


I guess I stand alone on the not being able to seperate the artist from the deeds. I can’t ever see myself playing his music ever again.

same here. i threw out all my ryan cds and shirts and posters but i couldn’t bring myself to toss the whiskeytown stuff…it just hits to close to home w/ my brother …and one day i plugged my phone into my truck like i always do…but the music app picked a random song like it sometimes does…Streets of Siren came on and i just couldn’t turn it off.


i remember wondering then and espeically now if his playing that album was a lure or attempt to connect or meet up w/ her…i know they did that interview together…it’s on youtube…

but just knowing what a douche pistol he is…i always wondered about his true intentions…

and, i also really liked his 1989 album take…i really love that album in general but ryan’s take on it was really good.


I definitely thought the Swift cover album was an attempt to get into her or her fans pants.

To be clear, I didn’t stop listening and toss the shirt because of any sort of “cancelling” by anyone but myself.


Ryan was likely attempting to achieve these particular goals with the Swift cover album. Get into her good graces while simultaneously trying to worm his way into her panties. And hopefully expand the marginal numbers of his own fan base by winning over Swift’s fan base. That’s the only angle I can come up with. I might be wrong as I so often am.


I love pop music but Taylor Swift is about the most bland and vanilla artist out there. Maybe that’s her appeal though. I know plenty of people who love her, so not judging her fans by any means. Pop music has gained a huge following of middle age dude bro music snobs over the past decade. Some, inlcuding some folks I know, are lonely creeps who idealize young women and want to fantasize about them through pop artists. Ryan probably overlaps with that subset on some level.

It might be a stretch to say that he covered the album to groom younger women or even to get in T Swizzle’s pants, but it speaks to his psyche. Without getting into psychoanalyzing nonsense, he still acts like a petulant child and inwardly probably never fully matured. And that extends to the way he treats women and probably who he’s attracted to.

While I did say that 1989 is probably his best thing since the golden era of 2005, I should say that I barely listen to RA (rather, at all I think?) these days. Even before it was publicly known how awful he’s been to women, my interest was waining – fueled by the mostly sub-par albums of Prisoner and the ST, despite my initial new album obsessions at the time, and his little soundbites revealing just how fake all of those albums were, and his way of putting down country music. Those recent albums (post 2005) don’t age well – not only because of who he is, but just generally overall from a purely musical perspective. And honestly, I think his lyrics have been firmly on a downhill trend since Easy Tiger.

Maybe it’s because I tie those albums to a specific time period of my life, and I’m over it or whatever, but I rarely find myself reaching for an RA album.

And of course he’s just generally a bad person. And I’m over his adolescent BS schtick.


I don’t know why any established or aspiring musician would want to work with Ryan Adams? Male or female. Accusations aside. It’s almost abundantly clear that Ryan Adams doesn’t play well with others. How many lineup changes did Whiskeytown go through before he just did the inevitable & went solo? How many band members as he gone through solo & Cardinals? I have to think it’s well into the double digits. Ryan seems to love Ryan only. And he seems to only “like” individuals that stroke his ego.

Remember the Cardinals shows around 2006 & 2007. That was one tight band. Really, good shows. I liked the 2005 version of the Cardinals too. But, Ryan didn’t keep the 2005 edition together very long. Anyhow the 06 & 07 Cardinals kicked ass. And they were getting great press/reviews for their shows as I recall. Emphasis on “they”. “They” as a whole. Not just Ryan. Well, coincidence or not, they didn’t stay together too much longer as I recall. There could have been multiple reasons. But, I always suspected it was Ryan’s ego not getting catered to enough. He might not have been too keen on sharing even a little bit of the spotlight with the Cardinals. So it was back to solo again.

And another reason I would think that other musicians might not want Ryan involved in their projects is he just seems flat out unreliable. He’s ditched now many other musicians’ projects over the years. Not to mention how many unfinished songs, allbums, projects of his own has he not seen through to the end? All the unreleased albums that he claims were not finished. I know he would write songs at a frantic pace. And maybe he has ADD or something. But, I might think another artist would be a little ambivalent to work with that kind of person. He gets bored & sometimes aborts his own material? How the hell is he going to treat other artists’ songs/albums if he’s working with them?

I’m only speculating. But, that’s my take. Ryan Adams’ past history (25 years worth) suggests he doesn’t work or play well with others for very long regardless of gender. Does he even have any bridges left to burn?

@Jerry All very valid points, RA doesn’t seem like someone you’d want to learn from in terms of interacting with others. Collaboration is so important, and particularly so in music – whether it’s working with producers, session musicians, or just others that you bounce ideas off of (at least from my estimates, translated from my growth as a scientist in a totally different field).

I also agree about the 2006–2007 Cardinals being so good. I have pretty much every show from that time period; I came in around 2004, but I feel like they really hit their stride at that point, and of course overlaps with when Neal really took off with them. In fact, in the past years, as I’ve gotten totally absorbed into the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles Around the Sun, and of course Neal’s albums, I wonder how much of my love of the Cardinals was the Cardinals, or just an extension of my love for Neal, but I digress.

I’m still a bit annoyed about RA’s tendency to talk up all these “masterpieces” that are just hanging out on some shelf somewhere (Blackhole, Suicide Handbook fully arranged, 48 Hrs, same thing, etc) and then they never come out. Since about 2010 or so I stopped believing anything he says about those things, and I’m not even convinced Blackhole really exists anymore, even though apparently Mandy heard it.

I suppose he’s still got a few bridges to burn; at least if you believe that he’s still friends with Don Was, Benmont Tench, etc, who still follow him on Instagram, if that means anything.

@thebalvenie agreed, I’ll let the RA stuff play if it comes up, but I don’t seek it out. I will admit I still play English Girls on the guitar now and again; that riff is just so damn good it’s basically just stuck in my fingers I suppose. Though I’ve mostly supplanted RA songs with Bruce songs in the past year or so.


I’ve expressed my stance on the cancel culture we currently live in numerous times. I won’t revisit it. I don’t know DRA personally but he’s always come across as a self absorbed, douchey, attention whorish asshole. And I got that vibe before I ever had internet access. I was a subscriber of the printed No Depression publication. What I read in stories/interviews in No Depression during Whiskeytown’s next big thing flirtation led me to that conclusion. But, I still loved his music & listened to it without feeling guilty or ashamed. And I will still listen to his music if & when the mood strikes. Without shame & without guilt.

I just haven’t felt compelled to to listen to Ryan Adams’ music in a long while. Not even the great shit from 1995 to 2005. Not because of the “me too” allegations. But, I’m just not the same exact person I was when his music meant so much to me. I had great times during that time in my life. But, I probably had more shitty times during that time period. And I no longer wish to romanticize that time in my life. It’s over & I never found what I was looking for during my alcohol fueled existence that spanned a little over a decade or so.

I’ll buy his next record. And I hope it’s great. But, I’m pretty damn sure it’ll be more of the same mediocre shit he’s been churning out the last 13 years. Mandy Moore should be thankful he didn’t write songs for her. He can’t even write good songs for himself anymore.
